Well we have only had intermittent coverage over the last few days, plus the slack one has been a bit busy socialising etc. so here is the last few days report.
Monday we travelled to Georgetown only to be told by the visitor centre that no free camps and nothing to do in town!!! The actual words when I asked the question were 'we are only a drive through town'! With further conversation she then reminded me that they had a large gemstone collection in the same building at a small charge. We moved on and Stopped at truck rest bay for the night that was only about 1km out of town.
Tuesday and first stop was Cumberland chimney just 20 kms out of town and would have been a nicer camp then on to Croydon where the spectacular visitor centre had a nice surprise of a movie to introduce us to the town then off to the caravan park run by council very inexpensive to encourage people to stay. After lunch we walked to the heritage buildings, restored, that line the entrance to the the town and are complete with audio imitating the past. We then met owner of store continuously trading for 120 yrs with just 6 owners and other heritage stuff. It was a really pleasant discovery to find a town that has put serious effort into attracting visitors through good first impressions and an imaginative treatment of its history. There have been others that have made the visit worthwhile but this was probably the best. We also met some people here who are travelling at least part of the same journey as us. We met a couple of others at previous stops.
Wednesday saw the rest of the town, revisited visitor centre then drove to Normanton where we were advised that the free camp was closed but there was another about 30 kms out of town. So on we drove found the campsite and our friends from Tuesday night.
So on to today. We took off drove the short distance to Karumba, saw what little there was to see, had fish & chips for lunch then drove back to last nights camp spot. Our friends did the same as the caravan parks at Karumba are expensive and fishing is the main activity. One good thing we got to see and photograph Brolgas.
